Based on the
Chinese best-selling novel by Jun Cai, this film tells the story of five
college co-eds who find themselves trapped inside a deadly phone game
called the "19 Levels of Hell." Former HK singer icon
Gillian Chung plays Rain, a young woman who gets swallowed into the game
after the death of her friend Eva (Lee Man-Kwan), a nasty suicide by cutting
her tongue off with bright red scissors. The plot borrows liberally from
other horror fare (i.e., ONE
MISSED CALL, RING,
PULSE,
FINAL DESTINATION, the Pang Bros' RE-CYCLE
et al) but manages to stay fresh and compelling throughout.
Although she
has starred in numerous films (e.g., FOX
LOVER, HOUSE
OF FURY), actress Gillian Chung is probably best known for her
first movie, Jackie Chan's vampire project TWINS
EFFECT (2003). She began her career as part of a singing duo called
the Twins with Charlene Choi (even though they weren't related,
they had an uncanny resemblance). Ms Choi also is featured in this film
as the character Wendy.
