Genre
fans have often called this film 'the Indonesia Friday the 13th.'
While that [Sean Cunningham] American movie is the obvious inspiration
here [see pic top, left], this is - perhaps - more an homage
than a ripoff. Interesting cinematography, effective atmosphere and
good characterization help make this production stand firmly on its
own.
The
story deals with three treasure hunters who travel to Siru Angsana [an
abandoned jungle camp] to find a sunken fortune at the bottom of a nearby
lake. At the same time, two young women - Nina and Hesty - along with
their friend Pono, have come to vacation at this very spot. The hunters
don't like the intrusion and try to scare the kids away with stories
of ghosts. It doesn't work. Then after Nina has a mishap in the lake,
she is rescued by Tommy and they immediately become smitten. His buddy
Johan pairs off with the other girl Hesty, leaving the boss and Pono
to stew by themselves. Soon, these romantic interludes fade into the
background when a box with a rotting corpse is pulled from the lake,
followed by the appearance of a mysterious maniac wielding a machete.
Director Sisworo
Putra is a major Indonesian cult filmmaker, best known for SATAN'S
SLAVES,
HELL HOLE, and I
WANT TO GET EVEN. Just prior to this movie, he helmed the notorious
cannibal pic THE
PRIMITIVES, which also starred Barry Prima. Mr Putra died January
1993, at age 54.
