Kuei
Chih-Hung's movie liberally borrows from the French horror classic Diabolique
[directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot in 1955]. Of course, this one is more
gory and sexier. The plot, however, is noticeably similar: sickly Sau-ying
is overtly mistreated and constantly tortured by her brutish husband Chun-yu.
Even though, she suffers from tuberculosis, Sau-ying endures her husband's
sexual abuse until servant girl Yi-wah takes pity on her and assists in
a drowning. They dump his body in a nearby pond. Sau-ying starts believing
that her husband has risen from the swamp to seek vengeance. The maid
says such a thing is impossible, that she is merely responding to a natural
guilt. However, it is soon obvious that something sinister is happening.
Bad boy
filmmaker Kuei Chih-Hung was responsible for a large number of the 'video
nasty' CAT III movies during Hong Kong's golden period, including BAMBOO
HOUSE OF DOLLS, the S&M opus KILLER
SNAKES, CURSE
OF EVIL, CORPSE
MANIA, SPIRIT
OF THE RAPEDand VIRGINS
OF THE SEVEN SEAS. After making 38 films - mostly between 1974-84
- Kuei Chih-Hung retired to Los Angeles USA where he died at age 61 in
October 1991 from liver cancer.
