Immediately
reminiscent of the new wave of Turkish horror films (SICCIN,
BLACK
MAGIC, et al), this Malaysian thriller kicks ass, becoming
one of that country's top movies. Here is a disturbing story of a young
couple, Fikah and her boyfriend Wahyu, who unknowingly move into an apartment
that used to be the residence of a black magic priest. He had conducted
many curses - ranging from grisly slaughter to brutal abortions - and
Flat 3A is still full of ghastly residue that infects Fikah and Wahyu.
In the
past few years, Malaysian horror cinema has drifted away from conventional
fare into more liberal territory. For example, the boxoffice hit MUNAFIK
[Hypocrite] concentrated on rigid (Islamic) religious horror. There
are no scenes of physical contact between different genders, as in Islamic
culture, such action is highly forbidden. However, here such pretense
is abandoned, instead this is a story of a young couple "living in
sin" tormented by an abortion curse. As the young people of Malaysia
have become less enthusiastic about traditional religious values, the
movies (BUYER
BEWARE, HISTERIA,
KHURAFAT,
etc) are starting to reflect that attitude, often creating 'horror'
from religion itself.
