This
is the legendary fantasy of two lovers, the White Haired Witch and Taoist
leader Zhuo Yihang, a relationship that could change the fate of the nation.
The story deals with Jade Raksha, the witch ruler of Lunar Kingdom, who
becomes a wanted criminal after getting framed for the murder of the Governor
in nearby Wudang. Meanwhile, there's internal unrest in the Ming Dynasty
and a young warrior named Zhuo is accused of poisoning the emperor. The
two fugitives meet, fall in love and rally the Lunar Kingdom into a [seemingly]
hopeless attempt to stand against the powerful Wudang military and its
new corrupt leader, Jin Duyi.
This
epic movie based on the novel Baifa Monü Zhuan (Romance of
the White Haired Maiden) written by Liang Yu-sheng in 1957. The story
has been brought to the screen numerous times before, from Ling Chang's
guilty pleasure WOLF
DEVIL WOMAN in 1982 to Ronnie Yu's masterpiece BRIDE
WITH WHITE HAIR in the early '90s. Legendary filmmaker Tsui Hark
works as the Action Coordinator here for his friend and cohort Jacob Cheung.
The movie is often breathtaking in its splash of color and stunning visuals,
adding even more energy to the battle scenes.
This
was the first time actor Vincent Zhao dropped his good-guy martial arts
persona to play the villain. He would be the bad guy again in BOUNDARY.
Ageless lead actress Fan Bing Bing has been making successful films since
the early '90s. She is best known to cult fans for LOST
IN BEIJING, DOUBLE
XPOSURE, and the horror film MATRIMONY.
