Possibly the
best of all contemporary Hong Kong fantasy films, with a strong cast and
exquisite filmmaking skills by Ronny Yu and his crew. Yu's collaboration
with cinematographer Peter Pau is one of the screen's most compelling
marriages. Together they've created a fantasy epic that crackles with
originality.
It's the story
- based on a two-volume Chinese novel written by Leung Yu-Sang in 1954
- of a beautiful girl/witch (Brigitte Lin) raised by wolves in the Wu
Dang Mountains and her conflict with the evil Mo Dynasty, governed by
a mutant Siamese twin named Ju Wu-Shuang. She eventually falls in love
with young warrior Zhuo Yi-Hang (Leslie Cheung), a union that angers the
emperor and forces him to use black magic to stop the romance.
