A group
of lucky lottery winners get a dream vacation at an idyllic island resort,
only to be trapped on an island infested with deadly snakes.
This
is the first Malaysian monster film. But it will probably be remembered
more for the inclusion of a gay couple in its list of characters... also
a first in Malaysian cinema. Mainstream motion pictures in that country
usually get bogged down in cultural religious ideology [e.g., the
big horror hit MUNAFIK
with no scenes of physical contact between different genders because such
action is forbidden in the Islamic culture], so the idea of a gay couple
here IS a big deal. And proof again that things
are changing quickly in that part of the world. Some of the younger directors
are breaking the cultural taboos, most notably Jeffrey Chiang (BUYER
BEWARE), Ryon Lee (HAUNTED
HOTEL), and Syamsui Yusof (KHURAFAT,
Mysticism).
A Malaysian
film with optional English subtitles; widescreen, (76 min.),
