original
Mexican/Spanish title VENENO PARA LAS HADAS [Poison for the Fairies]
director:
Carlos Enrique Taboada
starring: Ana Patricia Rojo · Elsa Maria Gutierrez · Leonar Llausas ·
Carmen Stein
A
ten year old girl named Vernocia convinces her new classmate, Flavia,
that she is a witch [through a variety of tricks and coincidences], forcing
the child to become more and more defendant on her. Although their games
are initially innocent - if not, naive - they soon take a nasty and violent
turn.
Director
Taboada made 20 films between 1965-89. His motion pictures - although
largely unseen outside of Mexico - are now realizing an overdue International
notoriety after being heralded by filmmaker Guillerno del Toro [of Shape
of Water fame] as the "single most influential" in his
life especially citing the superb BOOK
OF STONE as inspiration for his own Pan's Labyrinth.
This particular movie has been called "one of the five best Mexican
horror films of all time" and won five Mexican Academy Awards in
1985 including Best Picture. Most Taboada films deal with horror, usually
from a child's 'innocent' perspective. An exception to this motif is his
decidedly adult DRIFTER
IN THE RAIN. Arguably, Mr Taboada was better known for his scriptwriting,
delivering 80+ films [1951-1997] including the classic WITCH'S
MIRROR. He died from a heart attack in April 1997, at age 67.
A
Mexican film in Spanish with optional ON/OFF English subtitles; fullscreen
uncut (89 min.);
for ALL REGIONS, playable on any American DVD machine.
Extras include original theatrical trailer.
