Japanese title TOSHOKAN SENSO
director: Shinsuke Sato
starring Chiaki Kuriyama · Masanori Mimoto · Nana Eikura
· Jun'chi Okada · Sota Fukushi
Based
on the popular manga 2008 TV series by Hiro Arikawa, this is the massive
dystopian ScFi blockbuster from Shinsuke Sato (of
I AM A HERO fame). Although the story takes place in Japan 2019,
it is weirdly reminiscent of America's Fahrenheit 451 censorship
in the 1960s.
The government,
concerned over a new counter-culture revolution, passes a law to crack
down on free expression. The law gives the government power to create
an armed police force to "search out and destroy objectionable
printed material." Meanwhile, in opposition to this authoritarian
force, libraries organize their own militia known as the Library Defense
League. Commander Atsushi Dojo and Iku Kasahara begin their work to protect
the targeted libraries. A fierce, bloody battle then ensues between these
two groups over protection of books.
Director
Sato has been involved in movies, TV programs and video games for the
past two decades. Internationally, he is best known for I
AM A HERO [hailed as 'one of the greatest zombie movies ever made']
and female swordswoman film PRINCESS
BLADE. He is now engulfed in an award-winning series of action
movies called KINGDOM, detailing Qin's unification of China in 221 BCE.
