Sonny
Chiba plays Akira Inugami, the only survivor of a werewolf clan. He is
a reporter/detective who relies on feral instincts to solve crimes. As
the film opens, Akira becomes involved in a brutal, mysterious slaughter
on a Ginza backstreet [seemingly committed by an invisible tiger]. He
soon becomes hunted by a variety of real and supernatural beasts with
a common goal of putting an end to the Inugami clan.
The film
is essentially an exploitation fever-dream with naked women, a phantom
tiger, geysers of blood, crooked politicians and a shadow evil organization
known as the J-CIA. It's all based on a long-running adult manga called
Urufu Gai [Wolf Guy] and even though Sonny plays a werewolf,
there are oddly no transformation scenes. This one was shot the same year
as STREET
FIGHTER, the movie that gave him International fame, and just prior
to his BULLET
TRAIN. After
220+ films, Shin'ichi Chiba died in August 2021 from the Covid virus.
He was 85.
