Director Lin Zhen-Zhao is quickly becoming the king of Chinese monster
movies. After establishing himself with numerous above-average productions
(including SNOW
MONSTER and SNAKES),
he helmed this remarkable film along with special FX genius Cheng Si-Yu.
Despite the mundane [albeit cheezy] title and concept, this popcorn movie
manages to transcend any low expectations into the realm of extraordinary
through a cast of well-drawn characters, crisp dialogue and heart-thumping
action.
The
story deals with Mr Qian, the boss of a pharmaceutical company, who has
invested in the Poseidon Project [a research laboratory located 100 meters
below Towa Island]. Their goal is to develop a cure for cancer using a
serum derived from a genetically altered shark. Its DNA
has been mingled with that of an earthworm, turning the creature into
a Tremor-ish
monster, a shark capable of living on-or-under the ground, land or water.
When the shark breaks free, the molecular mutation causes it to grow massively
as it poses an immediate threat to the populated Ryan Island.
