MORBUS (1983) Ignasi Ferre's legendary Cult Film with Carla Day
MORBUS (1983) Ignasi Ferre\'s legendary Cult Film with Carla Day

director: Ignasi P Ferre
starring: Mon Ferre Carmen Serrett (as Carla Day) Joan Borras Victor Israel Sony Young Montse Calvo

Very similar to capturing a dream on film, Ignasi Ferre's legendary cult movie manages to introduce one absurd sequence after another without making any of it seem absurd. From the beginning - when a scientist creates a potion that rejuvenates the dead by mixing Prophatized Lithium and Sosa with woman's urine [see pic, above left] - the notion of absurdity never comes into play. Rather, each event seems to [somehow] follow with dreamlike precision. The result is a film that well-deserves it's cult status despite it's unfortunate obscurity. The plot deals with zombies, satanic cults, and a torture session (among other things) but the story concentrates mostly on the relationship between Juan [a horror writer better known by his pseudonym John Peters] living in a remote cabin and Anna who arrives at his door - completely naked - after getting attacked by zombies.

Some genre fans may recognize Carla Day (sometimes Carla Dey) from PORNO EXTREME MEASURES, BACANALES ROMANAS and VIRGIN FOR CALIGULA. She was a versatile, popular actress who enjoyed a cult following mostly for her erotic roles in the '80s. This was the debut film for filmmaker Ignasi Ferre. Afterwards, he left Spain for Italy where he became assistant director to Michelangelo Antonioni. His subsequent solo projects - after a decade in Italy - were mostly documentaries and Spanish TV projects. Perhaps the strangest thing about this exceptionally sleazy and exploitative film is it was written by Isabel Coixet, today a leading Feminist author and director in Europe.
