This
film goes far beyond the typical boundaries of 'thriller' and emerges
as one of the very best horror movies of the decade. In essence, THE
FORBIDDEN DOOR launched the career of Joko Anwar, who today (with
a collection of International hits like SATAN'S
SLAVES) has become one of the world's major directors. This one
is based on a novel by Sekar Ayu Asmara. But Joko takes the psychological
premise and reshapes it into his own mind-bending, toxic creation. It
is THE absolute must-see Indonesian movie of the
decades.
Truly,
it is best to approach this film with as little preconception as possible.
Simply settle back and prepare for an unforgettable cinematic experience.
However, for those who MUST have a plot: A sculptor
named Gambir specializes in creating life-size statues of pregnant women.
Gambir has become wildly successful. Perhaps his luck (somehow) has to
do with secretly encasing an aborted fetus inside each statue. But now,
Gambir is beginning to have second thoughts and has become disgusted by
his 'art.' He wants to quit making these pregnant women statues.
His wife Talyda (who helps him get the 'secret sauce') does not want him
to stop because they're getting rich. Meanwhile, everywhere Gambir goes
throughout the city he notices "Help Me" signs, seemingly the
desperate pleading of a tortured child. All this is even more concerning
when Gambir stumbles upon a mysterious Videodrome network filled
with sadistic programing aimed directly at him. Enough
now. This description merely scratches the surface of a descent
into hell that includes a locked red door, blackmail, secret societies,
infidelity, child abuse, Russian roulette, and the bloodiest Christmas
dinner ever seen in a movie.
