Here
is a well-written homage to the Magnificent Seven
from scripter Dario Argento and director Tonino Cervi, telling the story
of a mysterious, dressed-in-black stranger named Bill. He recruiting eccentric
gunmen to help him avenge the outlaw gang who murdered his wife.
Brett
Halsey had been an American TV star who went to Italy for work after the
cancellation of his television series Follow the Sun in
1962. He starred in everything from Peplums to Spaghetti Westerns, from
Giallos to Romantic Comedies. Cult fans know him best for the psychedelic
thriller HOT
LOVE OF THE YOUTH, Mario Bava's FOUR
TIMES THAT NIGHT and numerous Lucio Fulci films (DEVIL'S
HONEY, DEMONIA
and CAT
IN THE BRAIN).
According to Mr Halsey, this movie was his first Spaghetti
Western (a genre that initially met disdain and criticism for its unapologetic
attempt to duplicate an American/Hollywood staple) and he was not proud
to be part of it. That was the reason he hid behind the Montgomery Ford
pseudonym. Ironically,
it was the wrong decision and this would become the top grossing movie
in his filmography.
Director
Tonino Cervi is an Industry giant, best known as a producer for films
of Michelangelo Antonioni, Bernardo Bertolucci and Federico Fellini. Mr
Cervi directed only a handful of films [when he personally felt strongly
about the project] he is best known for NEST
OF VIPERS, QUEENS
OF EVIL and NAKED
SUN]. Tonino Cervi died April 1 2002 after suffering a heart attack.
He was 72.
