Original
Argentinean/Spanish title EL BOSQUE DE LOS SOMETIDOS [Forest
of Ghastly Submission]
also known as THE FLAYING
director:
Nicolas Amelio-Ortiz
starring: Olivia Tykocki · Juan Sebastin Alvarez · Celeste Subatin · Emilio
Martin
Set in
the 1970s, four friends are enjoying a road trip through rural Argentina
in their 'hippie' van. The initial goal was to shoot footage of an unorthodox
cross-country race for a student documentary but they are soon sidetracked
by a mysterious abandoned mansion hidden away in the middle of a deep
forest. Upon closer investigation, the youths find themselves trapped
in an inferno of gruesome mayhem.
This
debut film from Nicolas Amelio-Ortiz has garnered much attention in the
International marketplace as further proof that Argentina is - indeed
- in the throes of a horror explosion. The promotion is quick to mention
"this movie was made by 14 people, all under the age of 25."
And with youth also comes fresh new ideas, the very essence of creativity
in the horror arena. [Wes Craven, Tobe Hooper, George A Romeo and even
Herschell Gordon Lewis were all in their late 20s when they delivered
their masterpieces.] Nicolas Amelio-Ortiz has created a major (albeit,
unconventional) first-person narrative here that must be seen by any horror
fan. With this film, he joins the ranks of other emerging Argentinean
directors Daniel De La Vega (WHITE
COFFIN), Gonzalo Calzada (RESURRECTON),
Christoph Behl (EL
DESIERTO
The Desert), Pablo Pares (PLAGA
ZOMBI), Adrian Garcia Bogliano (I'LL
NEVER DIE ALONE), German Magarinos (ZOMBIE
SEXUAL APOCALYPSE), et al.
