Carl
Betz, in one of his only motion pictures, plays American newspaper journalist
Max Foster here. [He was best known for numerous TV shows including
Judd for the Defense (1968-72) and the role of Dr Alex
Stone, the dad on The Donna Reed Show (1958-64); at the
time, he was under consideration as the new James Bond after the retirement
of Sean Connery].
Newspaper
reporter Max Foster is in Hong Kong to assist a defecting Russian diplomat.
In return for a safe escape, the traitor must turn over a diary revealing
certain secret events taking place in China. But in the exchange, the
defector is killed and the diary vanishes. The reporter - with his younger
brother Buddy [played by pop singer Bobby Rydell] - go looking for diary,
chased by teams of International spies lead by Sue Ten Chan (Nancy Kwan).
This
film is certainly most significant for the participation of Nancy Kwan,
but like so many of her post-Hollywood movies (MAIN
ATTRACTION, TAMAHINE,
THE
WILD AFFAIR, et al), it suffered from poor distribution
and remains virtually lost today.
