director:
Coralie Fargeat
starring: Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz (as Matilda Lutz) · Kevin Janssens
· Vincent Colombe
The film
- written and directed by female Coralie Fargeat - is essentially an over-the-top,
bloody, excessively brutal version of I
SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE. In the story [which is also reminiscent of
Peter Collinson's OPEN
SEASON], three wealthy, business partners - each, of course, are
married family men - get together for their annual hunting games in a
desert canyon. But this time, Richard has come to the swank resort house
a few days early with his young mistress named Jen. He hopes to have his
fun and then whisk her away on the corporate helicopter before his business
partners arrive. Problems occur when the other two men show up unexpectedly
early. After a drunken, drug-infused night which finds them ogling Jen
but playing it safe, things explode. While her boyfriend is away securing
hunting permits, Jen is raped. When Richard returns and hears of the assault,
he reacts by trying to buy her off but then he pushes her off a cliff.
Impaled on a rotting tree limb, she is left for dead. But Jen is still
very much alive and - mostly with the help of super-powering peyote -
she begins a ruthless manhunt against the three men.
The showing
of this film was protested by a Women's Group at the midnight showing
at the 2017 Toronto Film Festival. But the manager of the event strongly
supported the motion picture, praising "the film's exquisite cinematography
and remarkable splash of color which established the breathtaking action...
a superb debut film." The movie was, however, interrupted when numerous
people walked out and one person fainted (during the glass in the foot
scene).
