Director/scripter
Poj Arnon bases his film on the 'true' account of a woman who found headlines
in 2011 Thailand with her story of being haunted by the ghost/fetus of
her aborted baby. The film is also influenced by another more sobering
scandal from 2009: the discovery of 2,002 fetuses in a Bangkok Buddhist
temple, reportedly the aborted babies from unwanted teen pregnancies.
Arnon's film emerges as a biting commentary on contemporary Thai standards
as well as an effective horror/ghost tale.
Police
photographer/detective Tri is working on a case of illegal abortions [all
abortions are currently illegal in Thailand]. At the same time, his little
daughter Yaimai has strange visions of a small ghostly child whom she
claims has identified himself as her brother. Tri is married to a middleschool
teacher named Pim. She discovers that one of her young students has been
impregnated by a friend who wants nothing to do with the baby and is pushing
for an abortion. Further investigation uncovers a number of other students
are also experiencing the same trauma.
After
her memorable debut in the exploitative women-in-prison film BUTTERFLY
IN GRAY, Pitchanart Sakakorn has gone on to become the Thai horror
queen, starring in such films as THE
VICTIM.
