Hisayasu
Sato directed this film for Osaka's ENK Studios in 1989, two years after
his very disturbing LOLITA
VIBRATOR TORTURE. This one deals with S&M and bondage, mostly
very rough, inside a gay fetish narrative. Inspired by various Franz
Kafka stories (especially the cockroach tale), Sato's superb camerawork
punctuates this story of a young businessman who has trouble adapting
to the office setting.
To make matters worse, he reads Kafka before going to sleep and dreams
he's an insect swallowed by his co-workers. With the gay sex theme and
the female Dominatrix segments, admittedly this film is not for everyone.
Much
has been written - pro and con - about director Hisayasu Sato and his
bitter, sledgehammer style. [Also see an exclusive interview in Asian
Cult Cinema
magazine
#34.] His 50+ movies are loaded with disenfranchised people, lonely
victims of urban paranoia, desperately trying to communicate but not
knowing how. Often, his films are difficult to watch, filled with savage
brutality, rape and sexual abuse. He says these images are used symbolically
to "emphasize loftier concerns about alienation" but his critics
say 'dark ultra-violence is the only message, simply atrocity as entertainment.'
In the horror arena, he is also known for SPLATTER
NAKED BLOOD. His assistant director for this project was Takahisa
Zeze who also helmed many of his own pink films including SNAKE
HEADED FISH and TOKYO
X EROTICA.
