Original
Hong Kong/Chinese title: HEI XING FENG YUN [Black Star Phoenix]
also known as GUNS OF THE MASTER KILLER
and LETHAL GIRLS
director: Teng Peng-Tang
starring: Mark Cheung (Mark Cheng) · Yukari Oshima · Lo
Lieh · Gordon Liu · Sophia Crawford · Tien Ching
The
plot deals with police attempting to stop gunrunners trafficking between
Hong Kong and mainland China. Superintendent Lau Fai (played by Gordon
Liu) along with his assistant Sophia (Sophia Crawford) plus mainland
cop Nan (Mark Cheng) are the good guys against Master Tian (Lo Lieh)
and his daughter Lin Ho-Hung (Yukari Oshima, the bad guys.
This
is the only film helmed by Teng Peng-Tang who spent most of his career
as the assistant director to Tsui Hark and John Woo. It seems he learn
one major thing from Woo... before a big gun battle there should be
lots of doves flying around. And there are a bunch of them just before
the explosive finale. Yukari Oshima made this movie shortly after marrying
her leading man, Mark Cheng. Unlike some of the other Mark-n-Yukari
ventures (GAMBLING
GHOSTS ARE READY, KICKBOXER
TEARS, GODFATHER'S
DAUGHTER MAFIA BLUES) there appears to be a chemistry here.
Perhaps the oddest thing about this film is superstar martial artist
Gordon Liu sporting a Magnum PI mustache and a mullet hairpiece [see
pic above center].
