'Oh
Calcutta' opened off-Broadway at the Edson in 1969. This live recording
is an exact capture of that controversial moment in time, the acceptance
of full nudity in the Performing Arts. Here is a Sketch Comedy Review
with musical interludes. All the skits deal with sex, most feature performers
in the nude or various stages of undress.
Obviously, the play had a difficult time with bluenose critics, government
censors and members of the "outraged public," but this project
had a secret weapon that made it a darling of the intellectual set.
Each of the
contributors - the actual writers of the skits - were well-known and
respected in the entertainment community. These contributors ranged
from a high drama playwright (Samuel Beckett) to pop star royalty
(John Lennon), from a Pulitzer Prizecartoonist (Jules
Feiffer) to an Academy Award-Winning Actor/Writer (Sam Shepard),
from a Tony-Winner Dancer/Choreographer (Margo Sappinton) to
a multiple Oscar-winning scriptwriter/director (Robert Benton).
Each wrote at least one of the sequences [the producers never revealed
who wrote what]. A critic at the New York Post said: "Even though
these pillars of Pop Culture Entertainment have written obvious smut,
no one can rightfully deny
the exceptional pedigree here."
