independent Italian film premiered at the 2010 Cannes film Festival,
an honor seldom extended to a horror movie (only a handful of recent
productions enjoyed similar invitations: MARTYRS,
and Lars Von Trier's ANTICRIST).
The story deals with a group of young people - organized by psych student
Marco - who visit Turin to investigate a case of demonic possession.
Marco intends to shoot a documentary which will discredit the supernatural
aspects of possession in favor of a scientific explanation. The conjuring
involves an unstable young 'goth' woman named Nicole who has a history
of dark experiences. Once the filming starts, things veer horribly off-kilter
and Marco develops a morbid interest in Nicole that puts the entire
experiment in jeopardy.
The film has been promoted as a "Return to the Grand Italian Cinema
of Mario Bava." The project is one of many recent attempts to reactivate
the horror genre in contemporary Europe. The results have been decidedly
mixed. However certain films - UBALDO
TERZANI HORROR SHOW, MY
LITTLE SISTER, IN
THE MARKET,and SYMPHONY
IN BLOOD RED - have managed to capture the flavor of the Italian
film with English subtitles; widescreen format, uncut (85 minutes),
DVD encoded for ALL REGION NTSC; extras include selected trailers.
