Bar Girls [Gai Nhay] (2003) Controversial Vietnamese film
Bar Girls [Gai Nhay] (2003) Controversial Vietnamese film

The Groundbreaking Film for Vietnamese Cinema

original Vietnamese title GAJ NHAY [Bar Girls]

director: Le Hoang
starring Minh Thu · My Duyen · Bang Lang · Kieu Thanh · Bich Hang

This film represents a major cultural change for domestic Vietnamese Cinema with a story that realistically deals with previously 'banned' subject matter, the bar girls who live in the shadows of prostitution. It is something of a miracle that the Communist authorities in Saigon allowed this movie to be made or shown with its graphic depiction of prostitution, sexuality, HIV/AIDS, drug use, and disproportionate wealth class struggles. The plot follows a group of five 'bar girls' as they experiment with drugs and clash with the underworld while leasing their bodies for a price. Eventually when one of them dies from a dose of bad heroin, they arm themselves and take revenge against the dealer.

A Vietnamese film, with English subtitles; widescreen format, uncut version (109 minutes),
DVDs encoded for ALL REGIONS NTSC; extras include original trailer.
