This medieval fantasy
comedy from China tells the story of a young man named Li Xiuyuan who
is destined to become a monk but first he must conduct a pilgrimage to
find the dragon master. On the way, he meets a variety of unusual characters
including a young woman desperate to bed him and others who are obsessed
with cheating him. As his journey continues, he begins to realize that
he may be up against an evil known as the giant of darkness that can manifest
itself into a dragon which will threaten his village.
This is a rather tedious
film for Western audiences who will have trouble understanding the cultural
nuances. But the characters - while often exaggerated to an uncomfortable
degree - are likable enough. Upcoming Chinese star He Wen Hui is endearing
with his uncomfortable confidence and he makes the journey more endurable.
