The film is set in
the 1940s, and starts with a strange murder in the beautiful Jiangnan
river delta. At the scene, all that is left is an exquisite pair of embroidered
shoes. An innocent seamstress is suspected and put to death, but the bloody
murders do not stop.
Director Wai Man Yip
is probably best known for his controversial yet accurate expose of Bruce
Lee THE
REAL BRUCE LEE (BRUCE LEE, MY BROTHER)but he is an accomplished
filmmaker who successfully made the transition from Hong Kong to the studios
in Beijing. During his lengthy career, he has directed 25+ films since
the early nineties (often behind the Raymond Yip alias). Martial arts fans will remember him most for the Jet
Li actioner WARLORDS.
