The
'Savage Three' are three levelheaded, well-educated young men - just
out of college and fresh into the workforce - who have been thrown together
into a mind-numbing job at a computer analysis company. They are best
friends, working together by day and playfully carousing at night. The
trio is dominated by charismatic Ovidio Mainardi who convinces the others
to escalate their night games into dangerous acts of violence. Ovidio
(played by cult fave Joe Dallesandro) is married to a beautiful woman,
a doctor who has put a career ahead of her marriage. Ovidio's frustration
with his loveless wife and boring job soon boils over into a full-fledged
assault against humanity as he and his friends carouse the downtown streets
committing raw acts of hatred and violence.
After
extensive work with Andy Warhol in the early '70s, Joe Dallesandro went
to Europe where he continued making numerous cutting-edge motion pictures
(JE
T'AIME, FLESH
FOR FRANKENSTEIN, BLOOD
FOR DRACULA, THE
STREETWALKER, MADNESS:
VACATION FOR A MASSACRE), however, this is one of Dallesandro's
strangest roles ever. Sure, he's remarkably handsome but seldom has he
been so cruel and vicious. Here, his character is utterly unlikeable while
still managing to be mesmerizing.
