Mike
and the Bots showed an edited/rearranged version of this film on MST3K.
Did it deserve the scathing treatment it received? Of course it did.
But without the gore, the nudity and the overtly disturbing scenes of
sexual brutality, there's not much movie left. Now, seize the opportunity
to see Lamberto Bava's film fully uncut!
Original Italian title: MOSTRO DI ROSSO NEL'OCEANO
[Monster from Ocean Red]
Original French title: LE MONSTRE DE L'OCEAN ROUGE [Monster from
Ocean Red] also known as MONSTER SHARK and DEVIL FISH
director: Lamberto Bava (as John Old Jr)
starring: Michael Sopkiw · Valentine Monnier · Gianni Garko · William
Berger · Dagmar Lassander
Lamberto
Bava didn't want to make a Shark Movie, especially a decade after
Jaws. He was really trying to raise the money for his dream project
Demons. The DACFILM executive producers made
a deal... deliver a quick shark flick and then move on to Demons
with a larger budget. Lamberto - with his director buddies Sergio Martino
and Luigi Cozzi - decided to have fun with the plot. The monster would
not be a Jaws Great White, but rather, an octopus/shark hybrid
that somehow survived prehistoric time. And there would be a thriller
element which would include nudity and a brute who drowns a young
women in a bath tub.
The three
men wrote the script [Sergio Martino used his Martin Dolman alias;
Luigi Cozzi signed Lewis Coates] and a cast of unknowns plus popular
genre actors were selected (including Gianni Garko of
SARTANA fame and Dagmar Lassander from SO
YOUNG SO LOVELY SO VICIOUS). Everybody went to Florida for the
shoot.
Dino
Conti plays marine biologist Bob Hogan (some sources insist he was paid
in beer, he drinks at least 6 Buds during his screentime). Valentine Monnier
is dolphin trainer Dr Stella Dickens (continuing Luigi Cozzi's habit of
always naming his lead heroine Stella). These two - along with
a young research scientist and a local sheriff - try to hunt down a large
sea monster causing havoc off the Florida coast.
