THUMB TRIPPING (1972) Meg Foster Hippie Flick
THUMB TRIPPING (1972) Meg Foster Hippie Flick
1987DVD

Perhaps the Best of All the Hippie Films... Easily the Most Controversial

director: Quentin Masters
starring: Meg Foster · Michael Burns · Bruce Dern · Mike Conrad · Joyce Van Patten · Marianna Hill

Gary and Shay meet on a beach in Big Sur and decide to hitchhike together, agreeing 'to take every ride offered' [a bad and naive idea then as it is now]. Through their thumb tripping, they meet an abusive mom looking for her runaway daughter in the Coast's hippie communes, a horny middle-age trucker who eventually locks Gary in the back so he can have sex with Shay, a young married couple who take partying to a new level, and a deadly psycho with a switchblade.
Despite this awesome debut project in '72, director Quentin Masters returned to Australian home for a handful of less-than-impessive films. He retired from the business after the disastrous racecar thriller Midnight Spares
in 1983. THUMB TRIPPING is based on the counterculture novel by Don Mitchell (who also wrote the screenplay) featuring vividly engrossing vignettes which nail rampant hedonism, moral permissiveness, unease/paranoia of the Nixon-era, erosion of flower child ideals... all of which defined the early 70's.
