Original Italian Title: LA MANO CHE NUTRE
LA MORTE
director: Sergio Garrone
starring: Klaus Kinski · Katia Christine · Marzia Damon
· Carmen Silva · Stella Calderoni · Romano DeGironcoli
Klaus
Kinski plays Professor Nijinski, a distraught scientist who wants to
restore the beauty of his disfigured wife Tanja. The crazed doctor and
his hunchback assistant kidnap young women in hopes of performing a
face transplant. Tanja's deceased father had been an experienced surgeon.
His name was Dr Ivan Rassimov (an obvious tongue-in-cheek nod to a genre
actor with the same name) and he had left his extensive notes on the
transplant procedure. Nonetheless, things don't go well and the mangled
bodies are mounting.
Towards
the end of his filmmaking career, director Sergio Garrone - best remembered
for his extraordinary Spaghetti Westerns (e.g., DJANGO
THE BASTARD and ROOM
TO DIE) - made this motion picture and its companion LOVERS
OF THE MONSTER, both starring Klaus Kinski. In fact, each of
these movies have exactly the same cast (with the exception of Carmen
Silva who only appears here) and, in both cases, the setting is the
same, 19th century American West. Some sources insist that only Garrone
knew he was making two films at the time and Kinski had stormed off
the set believing he had been contractually betrayed. Regardless, Sergio
Garrone brings a refreshing abandonment to these projects. He left the
film business a couple years later to open a chain of restaurants in
Italy. Today, Mr Garrone refuses to talk about his movies.
An
