director: Brian Trenchard-Smith
starring: Steve Railsback · Olivia Hussey · Michael Craig
· Carmen Duncan · Noel Ferrier · Lynda Stoner
In
the near future, after the holocaust, survivors are herded into prison
camps run by society's elite. There, they are conditioned through torture
and sexual abuse to become the ultimate victim, prepared to be
hunted for sport by the leaders of the camp and high-ranking politician.
Steve Railsback plays Paul, one of the newest prisoners, determined
not to go down without a fight.
Director
Brian Trenchard-Smith is known for his quirky films. This one leads
the pack with it's balls-to-wall, wildly excess graphic violence. Quentin
Tarrentino (in Entertainment Weekly called him 'one of my favorite
directors based on the films DEAD END DRIVE-IN and the martial
arts opus DAY
OF THE PANTHER.' Mr Trenchard-Smith lives in Australia where
he operates his own production studio and has made more than 50 films
and documentaries. This movie is easily his most ambitious. He also
made a nice comeback to exploitation cinema in 2007 with AZTEC
REX.
Interestingly,
this film was a disaster - both critically and financially - upon its
initial release in Australia and the United States in 1982, deemed "too
extreme for mainstream cinema." However, in 1984 it found distribution
in the UK under the title BLOOD CAMP THATCHER [inspired by the
name of the prison's commandant Charles Thatcher]. The movie was a huge,
instant British success, recouping its entire budget in 45 days. Seemingly
audiences were drawn to the toughness of the Thatcher moniker
as Margaret Thatcher was the 'Iron Lady' Prime Minister at the time.
