Based
on a horrific factual account of mayhem during the Spanish Inquisition,
director Sergio Grieco tells the story of an entire Catholic convent
sentenced to death. After the officials discover a nest of depravity
thriving inside the walls of Saint Valentine, they attempt to cleanse
the guilty nuns with extreme torture sessions. When they don't succeed
in purifying the convent, the Inquisition Court orders that it be sealed
with the entire congregation trapped inside. Without food and water,
the nuns soon go mad and turn against each other.
Sergio Grieco could best be described as a workman director, helming
25+ B-projects between 1950-63. These were interchangeable action films
and peplums, designed to occupy the second half of a double bill. Then
between 1964-73, Sergio hit his stride, (under the alias Terence Hathaway)
he became Italy's sought-after director of Spy Movies (best known for
007
MISSION BLOODY MARY).
From that Bondish genre, he moved to hard-edged crime films with MAD
DOG (Beasts With Guns) proving to be his most memorable. Wedged
between the Spy and Crime movies came SINFUL NUNS OF
SAINT VALENTINE in 1974. Mr Grieco died from a heart attack in
March 1982 at 65.
