starring: Peter Cushing · Edward Judd · Carole Gray ·
Eddie Byrne · Niall MacGinnis
A
team of scientists hoping to find a cure for cancer are working on a
secluded island off the Irish coast. Their experiments go badly and
deadly urchin monsters are unleashed into the community. These tentacled
creatures have the ability to attack, liquefy and digest bones from
living humans. A group of bone specialists (led by Peter Cushing) arrive
from the mainland to help stop the monsters.
Terence Fisher - renowned Hammer Studio horror director
- was not particularly fond of Science Fiction so he met this project
cautiously. He decided to accentuate characterization and atmosphere
while downplaying the out-of-this-world theatrics. This decision punctuated
the film, allowing both Peter Cushing and Edward Judd to shine with
sincerity and credibility. Mr Fisher died in June 1980 at age 76. Both
the co-stars have also passed: Peter Cushing died in August 1994 at
81 and Edward Judd was 76 in February 2009. This would be the final
film for Carole Gray (best known for her role in CURSE
OF THE FLY); she retired from the business to marry Douglas
Cullinen, the owner of Cullinen Diamonds of South Africa.
