Written, starring and directed by Naschy, here is the story of the Devil
(named Leonardo) returning to the Earth to see how humans have progressed
in the wake of Jesus's mercy. Set in 16th Century, this human-formed Lucifer
takes a stroll through Europe - intent on following the footsteps of the
Christ - to more closely examine the behavior of humans after being "saved"
by the Divine blood. Of course he also decides to have a little fun along
the way (he IS the devil afterall). But in the end,
Leonardo finds that men are as bad - if not worse - than he is.
Of course
Paul Naschy will always be known for his legendary Wolfman films, but
he also made some very shocking period films (like this one and INQUISITION).
Towards the end of his life, he left Europe to finally make a few films
in Hollywood, Fred Olen Ray's TOMB
OF THE WEREWOLF and COUNTESS
DRACULA'S ORGY OF BLOOD (both 2004). He then flew to Brazil for
Ivan Cardoso's tailor-made project WEREWOLF
IN THE AMAZON which would be his final motion picture. Paul Naschy
died of pancreatic cancer at age 75 in 2009.
