DAY THE LORD GOT BUSTED and LOVIN' MAN JESUS
director:
Burt Topper
starring: Fabian (Fabian Forte) · Nai Bonet · Tony Russel · Casey Kasem
· Larry Bishop · Kitty Vallacher
Matthew
Crowe (Fabian) is a whoring, pot-smoking, wandering singer who inadvertently
teams up with a tent-show preacher and discovers how to turn religion
into a personal fortune. The preacher immediately recognizes Matthew's
charisma, and - together as a team - they begin collecting big donations
for delivering sermons coupled with rocking gospel songs. As Matthew's
popularity grows, he signs a record deal, the preacher becomes his personal
manager and they hire a sleazy promotion man (played by the oily Casey
Kasem) to keep the ball rolling. Matthew Crowe becomes 'Matthew, Son
of Jesus' and young people across the country are packing arenas to
see him. But, even though he may appear to be the saintly prophet on stage,
Matthew is still addicted to rough sex and drugs. His dark side is on
a collision course with his image.
Interestingly,
the Fabian-of-the-Seventies was a much more accomplished entertainer than
the initial pop-star Fabian of the late Fifties and '60s. Despite his
inability to successfully carry a tune through an entire song, young Fabian
warbled through a series of chart hits - including TIGER, HOUND DOG MAN
and (his biggest) TURN ME LOOSE - before leaving the music business. By
1973, after dabbling in the movies, he made a concerted effort to change
his wholesome [yet artificial] image. Fabian had worked with American
International producer Burt Topper previously (on 1969's "Devil's
8" and a bit later on "The Hard Ride"), so he immediately
agreed to make this controversial film for Burt. At the same time, Fabian
shocked his fans by appearing nude in a '73 issue of PLAYGIRL magazine.
This
would be Burt Topper's last project as a director. After this motion picture,
he concentrated more on the daily business of running American International
Studios where he worked as Head of Production with Roger Corman and Samuel
Z Arkoff. Mr Topper died at age 78 in April 2007.
Fabian
went to Mexico in 1980 to make the film DYNASTY
OF DRACULA for Alfred Crevenna. That south-of-the-boarder project
was followed by numerous television productions. Today, Fabian and his
wife Andrea are actively involved with the American Diabetes Association
and the American Heart Association. He and Andrea live on a 20 acre farm
in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
