Animals
Break out of a Zoo and Wreck Havoc in the City!
director: Franco
Prosperi
starring: Lorraine De Selle · John Aldrich · Ugo Bologna
· Louisa Lloyd · John Stacy · Enzo Pezzu
During
the '60s and '70s, there were two different Italian directors with the
'Franco Prosperi' name. The other Franco Prosperi helmed such
projects as LAST
HOUSE ON THE BEACH. This Franco Prosperi made a career
of writing and directing mondo-type shockumentaries (MONDO
CANE, GOODBYE
UNCLE TOM, AFRICA
ADIOS, et al). He made only one 'fiction' film and this is it.
Without a doubt, his experience with with big-game animals was the immediate
attraction to this project and he makes the most of it. This would be
his last film before retiring in 1984. His son, Frederico has continued
the manta with films like THE
BITE.
The
plot is simple: Somebody put PCP in the water system and the animals
at the zoo have been drinking it. This mind-altering drug has caused
the animals to break out and wreck havoc in the city (the scene with
a cougar chasing and capturing a sportscar is remarkable cinema). Prosperi
jumps into the plot immediately. It's obvious he doesn't care much about
the human interactions, the film is - in reality - a collection of vignettes
with various animals causing destruction. As such, it's wonderful entertainment.
