Here's
one of the better films from director Sergio Garrone (best known for
his extraordinary Spaghetti Westerns and exploitation fare like SS
CAMP 5). This one finds its strength in Klaus Kinski's surprisingly
nuanced performance. He plays Alex Nijinksi, a doctor who stumbles upon
a secret laboratory after returning to his wife's ancestral homestead
in a remote village circa 1875. After reading the dead father's journal,
Dr Alex subjects himself to an experiment which transforms him into
a Jekyll/Hyde personality. Soon, the evil side of Alex goes on a killing/rape
rampage.
The
actual locale for this film is (purposely) avoided. It could be a European
village. Or possibly a community in America's old West. The sets are
the same that Mr Garrone used for his epic DJANGO
THE BASTARD in 1968. Sergio also has fun with many of the names
in this movie. For example, when Anna visits the grave of her father,
it bears the name Ivan Rassimov. (Ivan was a popular cult actor who
appeared in numerous films including Umberto Lenzi's EATEN
ALIVE and Garrone's own "If You Want to Live...Shoot!"
under the alias Sean Todd.) The neighboring doctor is Daninsky (a nod
to Paul Naschy's famous wolfman) and the drifter accused of murder is
Rom Polanski. Mr Garrone left the film business in 1989 to open a chain
of restaurants in Italy. Today he refuses to talk about his movies.
