· Paula Guyton
In 1971,
this film was widely promoted to the Grindhouse and Drive-In circuit as
"THE ALL-OUT SHOCKER THAT HAD TO WAIT FOR THE PERMISSIVE 1970s TO
BE MADE." With the rise of the counter-culture and the hippie lifestyle,
the runaway problem had become a national epidemic. Many unhappy teens
left their Midwest homes for the promise of West Coast or New York cultural
freedom. This movie attempted to philosophize that scenario. Of course,
it also exploited it.
Gilda
Texter plays Ricki, a teen girl who leaves her unhappy homelife and begins
hitchhiking to California. Along the way she meets lots of creeps but
she also takes a ride from Frank (William Smith) who has the job of finding
runaways and returning them to their parents. Frank tries to help Ricki,
but she rejects his suggestions. They remain on friendly terms. Once in
L.A., Ricki meets a prostitute named Lorri who gives her a place to stay
but also introduces her to drugs, hooking, and lesbianism.
Ms.
Texter found fame after playing the nude blonde riding a motorcycle in
"Vanishing Point." Even though her scene lasted for only a couple
minutes, she is what most people remember about that movie. Producer Charles
Beach Disckerson was quick to hire her for RUNAWAY.
Despite the moderate success of this film, Gilda decided acting was not
for her. Instead, she became a full-time costume designer (best known
for her work on "The Green Mile" and "Snake Eyes")
before retiring in 2006. It is ironic that someone who got famous for
riding-a-bike-in-the-nude became a professional costume designer.
