director: Pablo Santiago
starring: Troy Donahue · Junero Jennings · Vic Vargas · Eva Reyes · Daria
Ramirez
The story
is simple yet effective. Troy Donahue plays Steve a man on the run after
getting arrested for a phony murder rap. The film opens with his capture
by a tough island cop named Gene. The two are enroute back to Milan when
their ship is overrun by pirates. Steve and Gene escape by jumping overboard
and later find safety after washing ashore a desolate tropical island.
There, the peaceloving natives welcome them with open arms and a communal
mindset. But soon the pirates discover the idyllic paradise and decide
to claim it for themselves.
Troy
Donahue was a '50s heartthrob discovered by Warner Brothers and inserted
into their hit TV shows "Surfside Six" and "Hawaiian Eye."
He also headlined a variety of blockbuster movies (i.e., "Summer
Place" and "Parrish") before his popularity began to wane.
By this point in the mid-70s, he found work in numerous foreign projects.
Troy momentarily resurrected his career a year later when Francis Ford
Coppola tapped him for a role in "The Godfather II." He played
a character named Merle Johnson (which incidentally was his real name).
After 99 movies and 5 marriages, Mr Donahue died from heart failure in
2001 at age 64.
Junero
Jennings, the co-star here, was better known as a blaxploitation actor,
starring in a wide range of films from "The Mack" to "Black
Samson." He later moved into TV where he landed a role in "Battlestar
Galactica" and, later, the movie version of "Star Trek."
Junero retired from acting in 1994.
Director
Pablo Santiago made 120 Filipino movies between 1956-1996. Most of were
aimed at the youth/pop-music market: "DJ Dance Time" in '64,
"Hang On Discotheque" (1967) and "Rock Fest" in 1972.
He also made "Let's Do the Freddie" (1966) inspired by (but
not endorsed by) Freddie and the Dreamers who had created a dance called
the Freddie. Mr Santiago died from a heart attack in August 1998. He was
61.
