Cash Is A Mean Motherfucker In This Rare Crime Noir
director:
Bill Karn
starring: Johnny Cash · Donald Woods · Cay Forrester ·
Pamela Mason · Vic Tayback · Ron Howard
The year
was 1961 and Johnny Cash accepted this project as his entrance into motion
pictures. He probably regretted his mean-spirited role in this bleak,
crime-noir thriller. But for this film he is evil incarnate and his performance
alone makes this a must-see cult film. The film was originally released
in 1961 and then four years later re-released (edited) under the title
'Door-to-Door Maniac.'
The story
deals with a suburban robbery that goes awry. Cash plays Johnny Cabot.
He is part of a plot that involves a home invasion and a resulting ransom
demand. Cabot - posing as a door-to-door guitar instructor - forces his
way into a house, taking Nancy Wilson hostage. She is the wife of bank
vice-president Ken Wilson. Meanwhile, Cabots partner pushes into
Mr Wilsons office demanding $70,000 for his wifes safety.
The banker - secretly hoping to leave his wife and run away with his secretary
- is reluctant to give into the demands. His decision to stall the payoff
allows psycho Cabot the opportunity to torment Nancy before things turn
very ugly.
