FLYING GUILLOTINE (1974)
director: Ho Menga (Meng Hua)
starring: Chen Kuan Tai · Ku Feng · Liu Wu Chi ·
Pai Wei · Sau Kei Lee
Director Ho Menga
attained cult status among western Kung Fu film fans with this movie.
Chen Kuan Tai plays the leader of a group of killers, commissioned by
the Ching Emperor to use a deadly beheading weapon to assassinate dissidents.
Although based on a true story, the film's weapon was a complete fabrication
because in real life no one ever survived to tell what the actual weapon
looked like. Martial arts action is kept to a minimum for this movie;
Shaw Bros. studio was more interested in capitalizing on the horrific
qualities of a "flying guillotine as a vicious kung fu weapon.

FLYING GUILLOTINE 2 (1976)
director:
Gang Cheng & Shan Hua
starring: Ti Lung · Lieh Lo · Chun Tin Se · Lao Shen
· Wang Chung · Szu Shih
More decapitations
than the first entry, plus Ti Lung in a terrific performance. This sequel
is a rarity... better in almost every way than the original. The film
offers more martial arts this time around and is all the more entertaining
for it. The paranoid, tyrannical Manchu emperor is still after Ma Tang
(the good guy from the first film). Ma Tang, meanwhile, is leading a group
of Han rebels who seek to assassinate the emperor and overthrow the Manchu
government. He is assisted by the daughter of a government official. As
you may remember, Ma Tang had developed a metal umbrella to stop the flying
guillotine, but now the emperor has a new, improved model with two blades...
one to cut the umbrella and the second to cut off the head!
HK
import; widescreen uncut (88 min.) version in DVD format, encoded for
ALL REGIONS, playable on any American DVD machine. In English dubbed language.
