REMASTERED EDITION OF A 1968 JAPANESE CLASSIC

·

director: Kimiyoshi Yasuda
starring: Jun Fujimaki · Miwa Takada · Mikiko Tsubouchi · Takashi Kanda

In 18th Century Japan, a demon spinner is hired to celebrate the grand opening of a new brothel by telling his bizarre ghost stories to the patrons. He's secretly there to curse the establishment because the greedy owner, in a defiant move against religious and state authorities, has opened this whorehouse inside an old shrine. As the storyteller weaves his ghostly tales, the monsters begin to materialize and eventually they take over, killing everyone including the avaricious proprietor.

Despite the brothel setting, the film is decidedly sexless, with the patrons displaying more interest in the ghost stories than the women at hand. As a result, the film was a major hit with families and inspired numerous sequels.
