Kinski planned to produce a lavish mini-series based on the life of legendary
"devil violinist" Paganini ("the decadent 'rock star' of
his era"). But, when the investors saw the footage from the first
month of shooting, they were horrified by the overt sexuality and graphic
excess. They immediately stopped the project. Kinski and his longtime
producer Augusto Caminito took the existing footage and pieced it together
into a mishmash (profound, extraordinary, and honest, but still a mishmash)
of frantic beauty, perhaps unmatched in contemporary cinema.
Paganini could whip an audience into an
orgasmic frenzy with his music, earning him a reputation of being a "diabolical
vampire with a violin." Yet, ultimately, this is the story of a self-destructive
genius whose obsessions included not only a great musical vision, but
also a mania for sexual liaisons with underage females.
An Italian/French/German production, in English; Director's Cut encoded for ALL REGIONS NTSC, playable on any American DVD machine; bonus material
