This movie,
from director Masumura (BLIND
BEAST) remains one of the all-time great anti-war statements. In a
world where injured soldiers are never permitted to go home (for fear
that it would affect Japan's morale), nurse Sakura has the job of patching
'em up and shoving 'em back onto battlefield. Sometimes the horror of
war is too much for Sakura, at one point she wants to help a wounded soldier
so she sleeps with the head doctor to get approval for a blood transfusion
(the soldier dies anyway). Anther time she agrees to masturbate a solder
who has lost his hands in battle. This is truly dark cinema from a master
filmmaker.
