AEGIS is the
second 2005 Japanese film based on Harutoshi Fukui's novel LORELEI (also
see LORELEI, WITCH OF THE WESTERN SEA). This one concentrates more on
action and benefits from an infused a 21st century terrorist plot. Essentially,
it has been described as "DIE HARD on the open sea."
The Isokaze
is a cruiser-class Japanese naval ship on a routine training mission.
At sea, it's attacked by terrorists from outside and traitorous crewmen
from within. The bad guys plan to use a stolen American weapon to gas
Tokyo and murder tens of millions. The chief officer (played by Hiroyuki
Sanada of TWILIGHT SAMURAI fame) attempts to stop the mayhem.
A Japanese import; widescreen (1.85:1), uncut (127 min.) version
in DVD encoded for ALL REGIONS, playable on any American DVD machine;
in Japanese language with removable English subtitles.
