This
Shaw Bros classic is considered a masterpiece by most fans of the genre,
the martial arts epic of epics. However, it was a troubled project that
took three directors to complete. The ultimate credit goes to Chang Cheh,
but Pai Hsieh Lieh and Lui Chia Liang were also deeply involved (perhaps
that accounts for the extraordinary variations in style throughout the
film). Based on the true legend of how 108 rebels, living in the mountains,
were able to repeatedly defeat the invading Sung armies. The movie starred
just about anyone who was a "name" at Shaw Bros Studio, most
notably David Chiang, Chen Kuan-Tai and Ti Lung. The primitive battle
scenes are realistic and full of top class martial arts action. This is
a must see for any movie fan!
