"Probably
the most perfectly constructed Yakuza film of them all, emphasizing every
nuance of this unique genre," says film critic George Landon, "directed
by Kinji Fukasaku (of BATTLE ROYALE fame), the man often cited as Japan's
most consistently successful filmmaker in Japan."
The
film opens in Hiroshima, just after the Bombing. The city is in chaos.
A young thug, Masazo (Sugawara), takes advantage of the hysteria and begins
looting. In the confusion, he kills a storeowner. Masazo is arrested and
sent to prison where he meets a jailed gangster boss, the head of the
Doi family, who takes the hoodlum under his wing. But Masazo knows no
loyalty. When a rival gang bails him out of jail, he eagerly joins with
them. Eventually the two Yakuza clans meet in an all-out war.
