A cast of
"who's who in Japanese Cinema" fill this controversial production
from director Takashi Miike (produced by and co-starring Beat Takeshi
Kitano). Add to the package a huge body count, sex, vampires, sword-action
in the modern world, lots of blood-n-gore, zombies, snakes, a 350 pound
black samurai, a random-appearing folksinger, and birth itself. Plus,
consider... a broken storyline, crackerjack editing, an array of old news
clips and an incredibly uncomfortable place for a female assassin to hide
her two-foot sword.
As the movie opens, Izo is crucified (his crime isn't revealed) circa
200 years ago. His punishment goes far beyond multiple stabbings as he
hangs on the cross. Izo is condemned to wander as an animal, aimlessly,
through eternal damnation. He has only one agenda... to kill anyone in
his path. Izo drifts helplessly from one dimension into another. He searches
for "reason" in a place where Reason doesn't exist; he longs
for death, but no matter how torture his body endures, death isn't an
option.
