LIVING HELL
has been described as a "Japanese Chainsaw Masacre, without the Chainsaw."
Perhaps, due to the unrelenting cruelty, this is an accurate accolade.
However, in the annals of Horror, it would more correctly be compared
to dehumanized fare like ALL NIGHT LONG.
It is the first film from director Shugo Fujii who also wrote and stars
in the film. But note - LIVING HELL is one of the most disturbing and
thoroughly disgusting horror films to come along in a while.
The movie opens on a stormy night as a young woman kills the family dog
and eats the remains. That same night, in the same house, a grandmother
murders a woman with flesh-eating beetles and then she slaughters her
husband with a cleaver to the face. That's just the first five minutes
of this 104 minute shocker... ultimately, the story of a "female's
true, sadistic nature."
