Jodorowsky's
previous film, EL
TOPO, is still one of the greatest movies of all time, but amazingly
he manages to top himself with HOLY MOUNTAIN. This movie contains some
of the strangest and most wonderful scenes in the history of cinema. It's
filled - crammed packed - with bizarre images drawing upon religious and
occult philosophies, from Buddhism to Christianity, which seem inspired
by a mad marriage of Bunuel, Fellini and William Burroughs. A wandering
Christlike character meets a mystical guide who introduces him to six
powerful people, each representing a planet in the solar system. These
six, along with the christ, the guide and the guide's assistant, divest
themselves of their worldly possessions and become the "Nine" who will
seek out the Holy Mountain. After conquering the mountain, they plan to
become immortal by dethroning the gods who live there.
