original Mexican/Spanish title EL DEMONIO AZUL [The Blue Demon]
also known as BLUE DEMON VS THE WOLFMAN

director: Chano Urueta
starring Blue Demon (Alejandro Munoz Moreno) · Jaime Fernandez · Rosa Maria Vazquez · Mario Orea

After a few disappointing cameo roles, this was the first headlining film by the Blue Demon. Made in black-n-white, on a miniscule budget (seemingly, with a ghastly inferior 16mm film stock), this movie was produced merely to satisfy impatient 'second-string' wrestler Blue Demon who felt lost in the shadow of Santo, after signing to the same luchador studio. Despite the Z-grade production value of the film [or, maybe, because of it], Blue Demon's project became a surprise hit for Luis Enrique Vergara studios and the new wrestling star was immediately signed to the new, better financed BLUE DEMON VS. THE POWER OF SATAN, followed by HELLISH SPIDERS a year later. He retired from motion pictures in 1980, after 25 movies. Blue Demon died from a heart attack December 2000 at age 78.

The Mexican passion for horror is in full force here with creepy old mansions and castles, demon potions and flashy laboratories, plus wolfmen running in the woods killing innocent lovers. As usual for the luchador genre there's a wealth of wrestling action both in and out of the ring as Blue Demon challenges the werebeasts. It all starts when a couple is found crushed to death in the forest. The evidence suggests they were killed by a wolf... but, as somebody should've realized, wolves don't crush their victims to death. Then rumors of a werewolf begin. Not exactly sure why, but presumably because a wolfman was believed to prowl in the same woods 50 years previous. Of course, no one in authority thinks it's possible; however kindly Dr Gruber takes it seriously and asks masked championship wrestler Blue Demon to investigate.
